She's confusing to me now. I've stated on here before but in college, I ran in those circles in my militant stage, after being a deb girl, and I know that the militant, conscious community was very upset after she joined the Links. A lot of talk about that, mostly negative. Manning Marable's book angered a lot of Malcolm fans but he did have some good research in there. Basically, Betty was from an educated, middle-class, Christian Black family and he could not understand what in the world made someone like her join the NOI. And apparently, she wasn't exactly popular in the NOI because of her bougie, educated background, not popular with men or women. She and the NOI couldn't relate to each other. Malcolm's family didn't care for her either. After Malcolm dies, she returns to the middle class Betty so her joining the Links was in character for her though the public didn't get it. Those girls are not Black conscious, they were raised prep school, surburban kids and Betty herself had White friends. Let me hasten to add, I don't feel right judging her for that. She was left with 6 babies and nothing wrong with wanting your kids to have the best in life. Just that I really don't think Malcolm would have approved of the Links membership because the Black middle, upper class got some of his most stinging criticism for their failure to help less fortunate Blacks.
Its just that you wonder sometimes who she really was and what she believed in. She started out as the typical middle class, Christian black girl, married the symbol of Black radical and later Pan-Africanism, then after he dies, its like she regresses back to middle class Black respectability lady. I sometimes wonder if she fronted on the black nationalism for Malcolm's sake. I just had a thought: did she join the Nation just to get close to Malcolm because from everything I've ever read and heard, she was never really down with the program.
This is from the initial conspiracy thread. After reading up on Malcolm, I did feel like Betty was never there for the cause. If anyone can delve in on Bettys life growing up some more, I would like to hear it.

Just the anger that she joined the Links and never seemed to participate in anything Malcolm would have done. Also, read once at a conference, a young black woman went off about the evils of white folks and there was a white woman standing in the lobby listening to the young lady. Betty went over and hugged the white woman and completely ignored the black girl and her complaints. She did it purposely. And also how those girls were raised with little black consciousness or so its said but they really don't seem to know or care much about the struggle. Look at what Attallah did at Betty's funeral, taking up for Giulani of all people and telling the crowd to show him respect.
No, I think she loved Malcolm. She did fight hard to protect his legacy until she died, imo. Some don't think she upheld his legacy but I think she fought for him. But Malcolm was an analytical man. His marriage probably had a lot to do with business of being a pastor as well as love. He himself said his proposal wasn't romantic, not like the movie made it out. He called her and said Look, do you wanna get married? She said yes and that was it. No declarations of love or anything.
